MAMARONECK – On Sunday, March 22nd, at 10 AM, Motl Didner, the Associate Artistic Director of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, will trace the history of “Fiddler on the Roof,” the landmark production from the roots of Yiddish theater at Westchester Jewish Center in Mamaroneck. The multiple award-winning revival just closed an 18-month run in New York City and will shortly begin touring the US and internationally. Didner will also discuss the development of the American Broadway Musical, earlier dramatic adaptations of the Tevye stories by Sholem Aleichem, the unlikely success of the 1964 debut, and the even more unlikely Yiddish production in Israel in 1965, as well as give a sneak peek behind the curtain.

There will also be a special Appearance by Bruce Sabath, Yiddish “Fiddler on the Roof’s” Leyzer-Volf, performing “If I Were A Rich Man” on the piano.

Didner’s other directing credits include serving as co-director “The Golden Bride” (Drama Desk Award Nominated: Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Direction of a Musical, “The Sorceress,” “Fyvush Finkel Live!” (Drama Desk Award-nominated: Outstanding Musical Revue), Robert Brustein’s “The King of Second Avenue,” “The Megile of Itzik Manger,” “The Pushcart Peddlers,” and “The Marriage Contract.” He was the Yiddish coach on “An American Pickle,” starring Seth Rogen, “The Immigrant” at George Street Playhouse, and New York City Opera’s “Angels in America.” Didner was also an inaugural Translation Fellow at the Yiddish Book Center and teaches Yiddish language classes and theater workshops at the Workers’ Circle.

Bagels and lox will be served, and there is no cost to attend this event.

Westchester Jewish Center is on the corner of Palmer and Rockland Avenues in Mamaroneck, New York. Please bring your ID to enter the building.
