BEACON – The Beacon City Council will hold a public hearing on February 18 to consider extending its moratorium on large construction projects.

The initial moratorium went into effect in September when naturally occurring silt levels rose.

While the city has other water resources, Mayor Lee Kyriacou said officials want to be cautious. “It’s not our only source of water; we have three dams, we have other wells, but that particular one was being fussy. We were getting more sand than we wanted so we have been working on it for a while,” he said. “Apparently, we think we have sorted the issue out. In fact, along the way we have discovered another well that we have that will actually generate water. We just need a little more time to fix it. Once we do that it will be another three months, everything will be back online and we will be good.”

Kyriacou noted that should the moratorium be extended by three months, it will not affect individual home developments, but would affect the larger ones.
