ALBANY – The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office is among the top five in the state for returning illegally gained unemployment insurance payments.

In the last five years, the Westchester DA’s office returned over $750,000 to Albany.

In 2017, the county returned $317,842; in 2018, it returned $209,439; and it 2019, it returned $233,857.

Westchester came in fifth behind number one Queens, number two Erie County, number three Syracuse, and number four Monroe County.

“Our Economic Crimes Bureau actively pursues those who would steal money from the people of New York State by falsely claiming unemployment benefits,” said DA Anthony Scarpino, Jr. “They work closely with the Fraud Investigations team at the Department of Labor to stop criminals from taking illicit benefits and to garner restitution for the state.”

State Labor commissioner Roberta Reardon said they have “no tolerance for those who defraud the system, and this should serve as a reminder that those who break the law will be held accountable.”
