LIBERTY – School districts and community-based resources in Sullivan County have formed a School Health and Wellness Council to collaborate on methods to increase community-wide health and wellness activities throughout Sullivan County schools.

The new council will provide “a platform for schools to enhance their wellness policies and programs,” said Sandra Gerry, chairwoman of the Board of Directors for Sullivan 180, which has joined forces with Sullivan BOCES on the project.

At an initial meeting of the two groups held on January 22, the community partners shared their wellness initiatives, opening the door for school districts to know what is available for their use. Although everyone at the session was at different stages in rolling out wellness initiatives, the sharing of information allowed everyone to take away a new resource or idea on how to develop their respective efforts.

Dr. Robert Dufour, BOCES district superintendent, believes the new Health and Wellness Council “will make great strides in improving the health and wellness of our students and school employees, which will help improve the overall health of the county.”
