POUGHKEEPSIE – City of Poughkeepsie firefighters responded to 2 Catharine Street, between Main and Mill Streets for a reported structure fire at 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday.

Responding firefighters confirmed an actual fire and determined that the building was in the process of being evacuated.  The Poughkeepsie fire department is being assisted at the scene by the Arlington and Fairview fire departments.  Mobile Life Support Services is on scene for medical assistance.

City of Poughkeepsie firefighters work to make sure the building has been evacuated while extinguishing the fire.

The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department has Catharine Street closed between Main and Mill Streets.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation but witnesses did say that construction workers had been welding a gate in the building earlier.

As of 2:12 p.m., fire command reported that the fire has been knocked down and the firefighters are checking to see if flames have extended to the upper floors of the building.
