MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County 911 operation is currently run as an independent entity, but the new chairman of the county legislature would like to place it in the hands of the sheriff’s office.

Robert Doherty said it would be best to have the sheriff’s office manage the 911 emergency call center.  “He [the sheriff] is an elected official; there’s a cost savings. Currently they are answering to the county manager who has zero experience in law enforcement, fire or EMS,” he said.

Doherty brought his proposal during an oversight committee session on Tuesday, but the measure failed because it did not receive a second.
