NEWBURGH – Central Hudson Gas and Electric and Newburgh city workers are working to repair the natural gas system in a portion of the city. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when an improperly installed heater caused the leak, said John Maserjian, the utility’s spokesman.

While that is continuing, gas has been shut off in 82 homes and buildings along Palatine Avenue, Kennedy Place, Van Cleft Avenue and Dupont Avenue.

Gas cannot be turned back on until the water has been removed from the pipes, placed in drums and later tested as per environmental conservation department regulations.

Central Hudson has restored the service to some of those impacted customers, but workers must enter each home and building to insect interior piping and safely relight natural gas heaters and appliances.

Maserjian said Central Hudson hopes to have the majority of the buildings restored some time on Thursday.

Affected persons without head may go to the Newburgh Armory Larkin Center in Newburgh.
