NEWBURGH – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh held their annual day of community service on Monday to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Over 100 volunteers contributed to painting, deconstruction and insulating six active Habitat sites throughout the City of Newburgh. This year, there were markedly more volunteers than the last, with contributions from local children – 25 of whom contributed to painting properties on North Miller Street and William Street, as well as at the Newburgh Ministry.

Currently, Habitat for Humanity has nine houses under construction; all of which will be given to vetted families who have put in the “sweat equity” to earn placement within the properties.

Habitat Operations Manager Amy Gigiluto said they chose MLK Day specifically because of his outspoken promotion of a community first ideal.

“It is a national day of service. I think the quote is, ‘A day on, not a day off’, Martin Luther King, of course, believed in the beloved community, giving back and living a life of service,” said Gigiluto. “It’s an amazing day where we put on display exactly what Habitat Newburgh; and really, what we, as human beings, are capable of,” she said.

These sites will be ready for families within the Newburgh community to move into, solidifying Habitat’s promotion of having housing development without displacement.
