The award-winning Ulster County Clerk's Archives Gallery.

KINGSTON – Ulster County Clerk Nina Postupack ihas announced that the new permanent exhibit in the Archives Gallery, designed by Kristine Fitzgerald of 2k Design, has been given an American Graphic Design award from ‘Graphic Design USA magazine.  The exhibit was officially opened on September 6, 2019, and remains a permanent fixture at the Ulster County Clerk’s 2nd Floor Archives Gallery, 244 Fair Street, Kingston, New York.

Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) has been a business-to-business information source for graphic design professionals since 1963.  The magazine awarded 600 pieces in 2019 out of over 12,000 entries.  This year’s showcase reflects the many ways that graphic design shapes business and society, products and services, commerce and culture, and causes. The Archives Gallery Exhibit by 2k Design was honored as one of 50 winners in the “Pop, Signs & Exhibits” category.  Visit http://contests.gdusa.com/competitions/2019-american-graphic-design-awards to view the award winners.

Kris Fitzgerald is the sole proprietor of 2k Design and draws on three decades of design, marketing and entrepreneurial experience.  She holds a BFA with honors in graphic design from the Rochester Institute of Technology and is a member of the Type Director’s Club and the University & College Designers Association.  This is the second exhibit Kris has designed for the Ulster County Clerk’s Office, the first being a permanent exhibit at the Matthewis Persen House Museum, located at 74 John Street in Kingston.  Fitzgerald has extensive experience working with non-profits including the New York State Archives, Union College, and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, all of which also won awards this year, as well as the New York State Museum.

“Having the opportunity to design an exhibit showcasing historical records held in the collections of the Ulster County Clerk’s Office Archives was such an honor,” said Kris of 2K Design. “As an early colonial settlement and the first capital of New York, Kingston and its surrounding area were significant sites in the history of our state and developing nation. This design of this exhibit gives the public the chance to see replicas of records spanning four centuries that document that history, and to learn a little about the work done by the Ulster County Clerk’s Office to safeguard those records. From the exhibit headline modeled after typography on a map in the collections, to the selection of the color palette, backgrounds, and layered documents, every element of the design was chosen to highlight the depth and richness of the county’s history.”

The Archives Gallery exhibit shows a broad sampling of the archival record series that are available to the public for research and was made possible by a grant from the New York State Archives Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund.  The grant funded graphic design by Kris Fitzgerald of 2k Design and fabrication by Creatacor.  “Working with Kris has been a wonderful experience,” said County Clerk Postupack.  “She was able to take our ideas and documents and turn them into a beautiful and informative display that is now a permanent fixture in the Archives Gallery.  We congratulate Kris on this wonderful award and thank her for her vision and inspiration in designing the exhibit.”
