Acting Sullivan County District Attorney Meagan Galligan takes the oath of office on Tuesday.

MONTICELLO – Earlier this month, Jim Farrell became a new Sullivan County Court judge after serving as the county’s district attorney.

Tuesday, Democrat Meagan Galligan, Farrell’s chief assistant and an assistant district attorney since 2009, was sworn as the acting district attorney.

“I am looking to a year of hard work in the office and hard work out of the office,” said Galligan, who will seek election to the office in November.

Among her concerns is maneuvering through the obstacles presented by the controversial criminal justice reforms. “Assemblywoman Gunther and Senator Metzger indicated they are open to changing these bail reforms,” she said. “And I look very much to working with them toward common sense bail reform that accomplishes the goals they were looking for with respect to pre-trial detention – but also promotes public safety. My interest is in public safety.”

Galligan continues to work on the drug problem facing the county and the nation. Locally, she said the county has various programs available to help address the issue from all sides.
