NEWBURGH – William Horton, previously an assistant chief, was sworn in Monday night as Newburgh city fire chief.

He told the city council the department is one of the best in the state, despite the challenges facing Newburgh.

“We already know there are a lot of problems we have to deal with and there are a lot of unknowns that we are not even sure when they are going to pop up, but I do know that public safety is a foundational tenet of good government and without it, we will struggle forever,” he said. “What I do know is I am committed to strengthening the Newburgh Fire Department to a position that they can continue to meet the needs and the safety and security of the city.”

The department is behind the eight ball now as it lost 14 firefighters due to budget cuts at the beginning of the year.
