Inmate attacks correction officer at Sullivan Correctional

FALLSBURG – An inmate being frisked while being admitted to the mental health unit at the state’s Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg when he suddenly attacked a correction officer after his mechanical restraints were removed, the officers’ union stated.

The incident occurred on December 19, 2019.

The inmate is reported to have punched the officer in the side of the face, causing severe facial injuries.

Two responding officers took the inmate to the floor. The inmate continued to resist the officers until he was finally subdued and placed in mechanical wrist restraints by two other responding officers.

The inmate was then escorted to the medical unit during which time he became belligerent and combative.

The officer who was initially assaulted was transported to Albany Medical Center due to his severe facial injuries and was unable to return to work.

One of the other officers was also unable to return to work because of injuries.

The inmate is serving 9 ½ to 11 years for criminal sale of a controlled substance and assault.

He has a parole hearing in February.
