NEWBURGH – The austere Newburgh city budget for 2020 included laying off 15 police officers and the PBA president Thursday disputed what Mayor Torrance Harvey said the day before maintaining the city found funding to save two of those positions.

Union President Ricardo Rivera said two slots opened up when two cops left for better-paying jobs. “We still lost 13 guys the other day. They had to turn in their equipment, their guns and everything on December 30th and now a lot of them are without jobs,” he said. “It’s nothing special that anyone did. We had two senior guys who were not getting laid off find higher-paying jobs in other municipalities which opened up two positions for two guys of the 15 that were getting laid off.”

One of the senior officers left for more money in Spring Valley and the other joined the Beacon Police Department, Rivera said.

In the last 10 years, he said the Newburgh Police Department lost over 10 officers to other higher-paying municipalities.
