KIRYAS JOEL – Police spent much of the day Monday conducting threat assessments at various buildings in the Village of Kiryas Joel. The security review had been scheduled before last Saturday night’s attack on a Hanukkah celebration in Monsey in which five worshipers were attacked by a machete-wielding intruder.

Orange County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a walk-through of the main synagogue and made recommendations on how to improve security.

State Police, meanwhile, conducted assessments of the schools in the village, making similar recommendations on how to better secure them in the event of an intruder.

Village Director of Public Safety Moses Witriol said both reviews were helpful in providing additional guidance to beef up security in the Hasidic community.
