NEWBURGH – State lawmakers have teamed up with the Lyft ride-sharing service to help promote safety during New Year’s celebrations in the City of Newburgh.

Beginning December 31 at midnight and running until the same time on New Year’s Day, Lyft will be offering $10 off of rides to and from the city, meaning the discount can be used twice within that 24-hour period. If the ride is less than $10, it’s free; but, only to and from the City of Newburgh. This is one of many partnerships Lyft is doing with towns and cities throughout the state for the holiday.

Senator James Skoufis (D, Woodbury) said that 40 percent of fatal accidents that occur from New Year’s Eve, through New Year’s Day, involve drunk drivers and it’s not a risk anyone out celebrating should take.

“There are lots and lots and lots of people who are getting behind wheels after drinking, after celebrating and putting themselves, their neighbors and their fellow residents in danger here in the Hudson Valley and throughout New York State and the country,” said Skoufis. “It’s partnerships like this that we hope, that we know, will make our roads safer come New Year’s day when people are finding a way home,” he said.

The Lyft partnership will make it very easy for people celebrating in the city to get rides, according to City of Newburgh Police Sergeant Joseph Rutigliano and he said there is absolutely no reason to drink and drive due to this convenience.

“They’re going to make it easy for you. They’re going to get you home safe. They’re going to get you to and from your destination,” said Rutigliano. “We want everyone to go out and enjoy the holidays, but we want them to do it safely and we certainly don’t want to tell a family member someone else was hurt in an accident, especially one that was alcohol related,” he said.

People who wish to use the discount during the 24-hour period can use the code: NewburghNYE upon checkout with the Lyft app on their mobile devices.
