SAUGERTIES – A man and woman, who were struck and injured by a vehicle on Market Street in Saugerties near the post office, were charged with not using a crosswalk and failure to yield to a motor vehicle.

Saugerties Police said 20-year-old Jonathan Swart and 57-year-old Diane Swart of Saugerties walked off the curb into the street directly into the path of a southbound 2005 Chrysler sedan operated by a Saugerties woman.

Both pedestrians were treated at the scene and transported to Diaz ambulance and then transported to Health Alliance Hospital Broadway campus in Kingston.

Both pedestrians were charged with violations of vehicle and traffic law.

Police said pedestrians in a crosswalk have the right of way. Other than in a crosswalk, pedestrians must yield to all motor vehicles before attempting to cross a roadway.
