MONROE – A raging car fire created quite a sight for late night Christmas Eve travelers in Orange County.

Flames could be seen billowing out of the front engine compartment, and roaring into the night sky on Route 17 in Monroe around midnight.

The burned up car was on the shoulder of the westbound lanes just before Exit 130.

State Police had to shut down traffic so fire trucks could get to the scene.

There was no immediate word as to how many people were in the car when the fire broke out or if anyone got hurt.

Police have not said what caused the fire.
