KINGSTON – A 71-year-old Wappingers Falls woman died from injuries she sustained in a hiking accident on Saturday afternoon.
The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office said at about 10:40 a.m., Margaret Fitzgerald was hiking with a group about a mile and a half from the trailhead at the Mohonk Preserve in the Town of Marbletown when she slipped on an icy slope and fell some 50 feet down a narrow crevice.
State forest rangers rappelled down to reach her; however, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
In addition to the forest rangers, assistance was provided by the Marbletown Fire Department, High Falls Rescue Squad, Mobile Life Support Services and Mohonk Preserve staff.
