POUGHKEEPSIE – Members of the City of Poughkeepsie DPW braved 17-degree temps on Thursday morning to install a menorah at the corner of Main and Market Streets.

The candelabra, with eight candles or lights and a main light in the center – the shamus – denotes the eight days an oil-fueled lamp burned for eight days even though there was only enough oil for one day.

“When we were told the individual who erected the menorah for the past several years was not able to this year, we were happy to help with this important symbol during Hanukkah,” said Mayor Robert Rolison.

Ori Brachfeld, owner of The Ugly Mug on Market Street said, “Poughkeepsie gives all faiths a chance to enjoy the holiday season.  As a member of the Jewish religion, I appreciate the city’s efforts to be all-inclusive.”

Jenn Morrison of Beacon works in Poughkeepsie and said, “A menorah on display tells me that Poughkeepsie cares about all of the people that live and work here.”
