MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office has rescued all types of wildlife over the years including fawns and bear cubs.

This was a first, though.

A Barred Owl had been struck by a vehicle and was having difficulty flying. Deputy Kyle Geraine picked up the bird on Anawana Lake Road in the Town of Thompson.

“Hootie” came along peacefully with the deputy to the office in Monticello and was turned over to State Department of Environmental Conservation Officer John Walraven who transported it to a local wildlife rehabilitator for medical treatment and recovery.
