ALBANY – Moffat Library in the Village of Washingtonville will be able to purchase a generator to keep the lights on in the event of a power outage thanks to a $68,000 grant secured by State Senator James Skoufis (D, Woodbury).

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene in 2011, the village was left without power for over a week. Roads were closed and residents were stranded, unable to obtain emergency services.

“I know how important it is for our community’s centers to keep the lights on, especially when most people’s lights are out,” said Skoufis.

Moffat Director Carol McCrossen said the generator “has already helped the library by enabling us to keep the power on, provide a warm, safe place for our community to congregate and communicate with each other and the outside world and by providing a place for people to ‘plug in’ and recharge, both physically and mentally.”
