A send-off hug for Mr. Riolo

CARMEL – The cheers were deafening while the love and admiration for one of Putnam County’s most liked and respected school administrators was evident when Carmel High School said ‘farewell’ to its principal Lou Riolo.

On Riolo’s final day as chief building administrator last Tuesday, faculty, staff and students held a pep rally to honor a man who has dedicated his life to the education of children.

Fourteen-hundred students joined by dozens of faculty and staff crowded into the high school gymnasium for the send-off.

Riolo now begins his new role as assistant superintendent of administration at Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES.

Students and faculty described Riolo as a friend who was “caring, inspiring, loving, considerate, compassionate, kind hearted and ‘bald.’”

You are the most caring man I know,” said one student via a video recording. Another called him the “best of the best.” A young co-ed called her principal “a model for us and for life. Each person in this room is a better person today because of you.”

Superintendent Andy Irvin thanked Riolo for “the guidance you have showed me. You are truly a part of the fabric of Carmel High School.”

Principal of Carmel High School for the past five years, Riolo leaves Carmel for the first time in nearly half a century, since he attended Carmel schools as a child, taught social studies for 26 years, and served as department chairman before becoming the school’s chief administrator.

Carmel is my home. You are family. I am experiencing sadness as well as excitement. The new position feels right and I know it is right for my family.”

Riolo said he had no complaints. It’s been a fantastic ride but this is my next career path.”

Riolo’s eyes filled with emotion. “I have been blessed having two of the best jobs in the world by first teaching kids and then becoming their principal. I love you all.”

The audience replied in unison. “We love you Mr. Riolo!” before a cheer shook the rafters at the high school.
