EAST FISHKILL – An early morning wreck in the northbound lanes of the Taconic State Parkway in East Fishkill has involved a New York State Police cruiser.  The trooper was out of the vehicle, assisting at an accident when the vehicle was struck.

The trooper was not injured in the second wreck.  The New York State Police are using the accident as an example of why the “Move Over Law” was enacted.

Police noted the law requires drivers to slow down and change lanes if possible when approaching emergency vehicles. The law was first established in 2011, included law enforcement vehicles along with tow trucks, road crews, and others.

It was amended in 2017 to include volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel using flashing blue or green lights that are actively assisting others.

The fine for violating the law is $275 plus a mandatory surcharge of at least $88 and will also add two points to your driver’s license.
