Dutchess County crash claims one life

The accident sent several people to the hospital and shut down Route 55.

BEEKMAN – A crash on Route 55 near Gardner Hollow Road in Beekman left one person dead and sent others to the hospital, according to Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Shawn Castano.

The accident occurred on Friday morning around 8:30 a.m.

The Beekman Fire Department responded to the accident involving a Chevrolet Van and Honda Pilot with the victims all trapped in their vehicles.  The Pawling and Union Vale Fire Departments also responded to the scene to assist in the extrication.

Castano said the initial investigation determined that the Honda, operated by an 18-year-old man from Pawling, crossed into the eastbound lane and struck the Chevy van head-on.  The driver of the van, a 50-year-old Pleasant Valley man, was killed in the collision. The second passenger in the van sustained critical injuries and was airlifted by LifeNet to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.  A third passenger in the van, a 22-year-old man, was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie by EMStar. The operator of the Honda was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital by EMStar for nt of his injuries.

Route 55 was closed for approximately four hours while first responders and the accident investigators performed their duties.  The Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office and the New York State Police assisted at the scene.
