STORMVILLE – It took several corrections officers to subdue a Green Haven Correctional Facility inmate who attacked one.

The incident at about 6:50 p.m. on November 23 was reported by the New York State Corrections Officers PBA.

The inmate involved was let out of his cell to use the phone. He began arguing with the officer about the use of the kiosk for his tablet.

The officer attempted to deescalate the situation when the inmate attacked the officer punching him several times in the face.

A nearby officer came to his aid and attempted to grab the inmate with upper body holds but the inmate struck the second officer to the back of his head and body. That officer took the inmate to the floor.

A third officer used pepper spray in an attempt to control the inmate, but it had no effect.

The inmate continued to throw punches at the officers while more pepper spray was used without effect.

More responding officers arrived and were able to restrain the combative inmate.

The union said all staff members were seen by in-house medical staff. Two officers were transported to Vassar Brothers Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment and were unable to return to duty.
