SUNY New Paltz names new Dean of Education

NEW PALTZ– SUNY New Paltz has announced the appointment of René Antrop-González of Metropolitan State University in Saint Paul, Minnesota, as dean of the School of Education, effective June 15, 2020.

As the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Education, Antrop-González will mentor and support department chairs; evaluate and develop faculty and recruit new faculty; support and initiate regional partnerships; and coordinate with faculty to promote innovative programs responsive to the needs of the region. He will also manage the School’s budget and engage in external fundraising, oversee accreditation procedures; and implement SUNY and State Education Department policies.

Antrop-González, who joined Metropolitan State University in 2015 as dean of the School of Urban Education, serves as director of university graduate programs. In this leadership role, he collaborates with colleagues across the University to develop and revise policies and procedures and provide recommendations for strategies to enhance graduate program visibility and enrollments.

Prior to his tenure at Metropolitan State University, he was professor and Goizueta Foundation Chair in Education at Dalton State College (2013-2015). Antrop-González also held several positions within the Second Language Education area of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2001-2013), including professor of curriculum and instruction and program coordinator of second language education.

He holds a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, in Spanish from the University of Central Florida; a master’s degree, magna cum laude, in Teaching English as a Second Language from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico; and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Bilingual Education from Pennsylvania State University.

“I am confident that Dr. Antrop-González’s impressive combination of notable faculty and administrative achievements and his demonstrated success at enhancing education from pre-school through post-secondary levels will continue to advance the exceptional work already being done by our talented students and faculty in the School of Education,” said SUNY New Paltz President Donald P. Christian.

Antrop-González’s appointment follows a national search. Michael Rosenberg recently announced his plans to end his service as dean of the School of Education and will return to the faculty as professor of special education in the Department of Teaching and Learning in fall 2020.
