ALBANY – Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the completion of the rehabilitation of the Interstate 84 overpass atop Route 9W, located on the west approach of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. The $16.25 million project has been completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

“Interstate 84, with the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge as a central link, is one of the crucial travel and commerce corridors in the Hudson Valley and other parts of the Northeastern United States,” Governor Cuomo said. “Thanks to our continuing investment in modernizing our state’s infrastructure, the I-84 overpass atop 9W has been brought to current highway standards and has a new deck that will last for decades into the future.”

In April 2018, work began to rehabilitate the I-84 overpass above Route 9W in the Town of Newburgh. The project involved raising the overpass by two feet, from 14 feet to 16 feet, in order to provide better clearance for truck traffic below on Route 9W and to meet current interstate highway standards. The project occurred on property belonging to the New York State Bridge Authority, which operates the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and four other vehicular spans over the Hudson River. Traffic on the west approach of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge will return to the normal traffic pattern and be alleviated of construction-related congestion.

Richard A. Gerentine, Chairman of the New York State Bridge Authority, said, “Projects like these are a necessary part of the upkeep of our spans. The Board of Commissioners is pleased that this project has been completed a month ahead of time and below the expected costs.”

Tara Sullivan, Acting Executive Director for the Bridge Authority, said, “This project, which has brought needed improvements to the overpass atop Route 9W, proved to be complex, but our staff and contractors proved they could get the job done in a timely and budget-conscious manner.”

Senator James Skoufis said, “As someone who newly represents the Town and City of Newburgh, it’s important to me that these kinds of much-needed improvements are made and in compliance with current highway standards. Investing in the Hudson Valley’s infrastructure is of the utmost importance, especially in critical corridors like the I-84 overpass above Route 9W. I thank the Governor and the Bridge Authority for helping to get this project completed.”

Assembly Member Jonathan G. Jacobson said, “I applaud the Governor for getting this project done ahead of schedule and below projected costs. The upgrade of the existing overpass will make travel safer on I-84 and 9W.”

Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus said, “Safe and reliable infrastructure is important to Orange County residents and visitors alike. This project provides a safety upgrade with better clearance for trucks to meet current interstate standards on bustling I-84. The completion of this rehabilitation project comes at the perfect time with the holidays right around the corner and traffic increasing.”
