Dead newborn found in vacant Port Jervis lot

PORT JERVIS – A newborn baby with its umbilical cord still attached was found dead in a vacant lot at 39 Orange Street in the City of Port Jervis Tuesday night.

The unclothed infant was discovered by police officers at the lot at the intersection of Orange Street and Hornbeck Avenue in the city’s third ward.

Police Chief William Worden said investigators have identified the mother, a local resident, and have interviewed her.

An autopsy was to be performed by the Office of the Orange County Medical Examiner and will await toxicology results.

Worden said they continue to investigate to determine where the baby was born.

Police are asking anyone who may have information about the case to call at 845-856-5101.

The Port Jervis Detective Unit is continuing to investigate along with the State Police Forensic Identification Unit, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and County Medical Examiner’s Office.
