POUGHKEEPSIE – A Monday afternoon blaze in a two-family house sent one tenant to the hospital and caused damage to both apartments.

Poughkeepsie firefighters responded to 2 Mt. Carmel Place to find heavy fire in the ground floor apartment.  Firefighters from Engine 1 and Ladder 1, stationed a block away on N. Clover Street quickly got a line in operation and the bulk of the fire was knocked down in approximately ten minutes.  Firefighters from both the Fairview and Arlington Fire Departments responded to the scene to assist Poughkeepsie’s first responders that had responded with Engines 2 and 3 along with Tower Ladder 2.  An additional crew from Arlington was on standby in their own firehouse, and Roosevelt and Highland firefighters did the same in their own firehouses.

Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison commended the work done by the firefighters, saying “This was good work by the Poughkeepsie Fire Department.  An aggressive interior attack limited the damage and saved the building.”

The second-floor apartment was vacant because the tenants had moved out over the weekend.  The first-floor tenant was treated at the hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation. The building is owned by Pasquale Provenzano, who lives in the same neighborhood.
