ALBANY – Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation holding the Spackenkill Union Free School District harmless for the $5.5 million penalty it was assessed for the late filing of paperwork related to a construction project.

The governor has signed similar measures for other school districts in the region while he has vetoed others.

The Spackenkill legislation was sponsored by Senator Susan Serino (R, Hyde Park) and Assemblywoman Didi Barrett (D, Hudson).

“It is simply not right to make current and future Spackenkill students, taxpayers and local businesses carry the burden of millions of dollars in penalties for a paperwork error,” said Barrett, who said the “excessive penalty” would have represented 12 percent of the district’s annual budget.
