BREWSTER – Traffic is slower than usual these days in the Village of Brewster as State Department of Transportation crews have moved onto the site of the old railroad bridge on Route 6 to begin a $10.9 million project that will replace the span that carries Carmel Avenue over the Harlem Division’s Metro-North Railroad tracks.

DOT Commissioner Marie Dominguez said the project would “enhance safety while improving travel conditions which serves as a gateway to the village and the Metro North Railroad Station.”

The new bridge is being constructed 75 feet to the south of the existing structure creating a direct intersection with Michael Neuner Drive that fulfills a goal of the village’s Master Plan to improve downtown access.

New traffic signals and crosswalks will be installed at the intersection of Route 6 and Michael Neuner Drive.

Last week, huge pieces of machinery arrived on the scene and pile drivers were observed creating the foundation for steel girders that will serve as the base of the new bridge.

Traffic is being maintained on the existing bridge and Route 6 while the new span is constructed and road realignment are taking place.

Work is expected to be completed a year from now.
