New Windsor man indicted on Newburgh attempted murder charge

GOSHEN – Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler announced that on Monday, Ryan Discua, also known as “Soda Pop,” 23, of New Windsor was arraigned before Orange County Court Judge Robert Freehill, on an indictment charging him with crimes including attempted murder.

Discua is also charged with assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the shooting of a man in the City of Newburgh.

That shooting was alleged to have occurred on October 9, 2019, at about 10:50 p.m. in the vicinity of 129 William Street. The man who was shot suffered serious physical injury.

Discua is also charged with two additional counts each of criminal possession for having illegally possessed a semiautomatic pistol during a “shootout” with another individual on October 6, 2019, at approximately 2:11 p.m., near 264 First Street, in the City of Newburgh, and for possessing a loaded 9mm pistol when he was arrested by the Newburgh City Police on October 10, 2019, at about 8:17 p.m. in the vicinity of 230 Broadway, in the City of Newburgh.

Discua faces 25 years in prison on the charge of attempted murder and possible additional consecutive prison time on the charges.

Bail was set at $500,000 cash or $1 million bond.

“City of Newburgh residents deserve to be free from wanton gunplay on the streets where they live, work and raise their families,” said District Attorney David Hoovler.  “I thank the City of Newburgh Police Department, the New York State Police and the Town of New Windsor Police for their actions on this case and their untiring efforts to prevent additional violence.”
