WASHINGTON – It has been well over a year since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it would issue a report on the worthiness of school bus stop sign cameras.

There has yet to be a report and US Senator Charles Schumer on Wednesday called on the federal agency to finalize and present it as soon as possible.

Should the study suggest that those devices are necessary, how they would be paid for would have to be worked out.

“Should NHTSA determine that mandating cameras on school buses is a worthy requirement, it has to look into the possibility of using federal funding for that installation,” he said. “NHTSA in the past has federally funded various safety requirements.”

Just recently, Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus advanced a proposal to the county legislature to explore those school bus stop sign cameras in his county.
