Regional unemployment inches up slightly

ALBANY – Unemployment in the Mid-Hudson Valley/Catskill region squeaked up slightly in the 12 months ended in September, the state labor department reported Tuesday.

Only Sullivan County’s rate of joblessness declined, going from 3.5 percent in September 2018 to 3.4 percent in September 2019.

Ulster County’s unemployment rate remained the same at 3.4 percent.

Columbia County, which increased from 2.7 percent in September 2018 to 2.8 percent this September, continued to have the lowest unemployment rate in the region.

Sullivan County had a 3.4 percent rate, down 0.01 percent; Dutchess (up from 3.3 percent) and Rockland counties (up from 3.4 percent) each had joblessness of 3.5 percent.

Putnam County joblessness rose from 3.3 percent to 3.6 percent.

Westchester (up from 3.5 percent) and Greene (up from 3.6 percent) counties each had 3.7 percent unemployment in September.

Orange County joblessness rose from 3.5 percent to 3.8 percent.

Total unemployment in the Hudson Valley in September was 3.6 percent.
