KINGSTON – The Ulster County Legislature approved a local law requiring restaurants and fast food establishments to provide plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery and condiment packages only when a customer asks for them.

Residents who spoke during public comment Tuesday night supported the move.

Among those lawmakers backing the proposal was Kathy Nolan.

“For stirrers and condiments in particular there are good alternatives to plastics and I hope we will be engaging in a cooperative way with the business community to make this transit which will save them money, increase their reputation with the community and continue Ulster County on the path to be a leader in decreasing our waste,” she said.

The legislature also approved a resolution declaring the county is facing a climate emergency.
