POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Republican Chairman Michael McCormack is calling on County Democratic Chairwoman Elisa Sumner to “join Democratic County legislators who have called for the resignation of Giancarlo Llaverias and to withdraw the party’s endorsement of his re-election in November.”

McCormack cites vulgar Facebook postings from Llaverias that demeaned women and joked about rape as well as a recent video where he admitted to slapping his girlfriend across the face.

“After being caught demeaning and degrading women on Facebook, Llaverias diminished his actions as youthful misdeeds,” McCormack said. “Then when confronted with video from January 2019 admitting to physically abusing women, Llaverias lied about it.”

Sumner fired back at McCormack. “The Republicans have a president who is responsible for the current genocide of our allies the Kurds and the resurgence of ISIS,” she said. “Yet the Dutchess Republican response is for their chair to stand on the steps of the Poughkeepsie Post Office and hold a pro Trump rally.”

Sumner said the “constant attack of a young man of color for discussing actions from his past is nothing more than well timed deflection from the horrors daily perpetrated by their leader. Isn’t the Republican legislator who from the legislature floor accused woman of being responsible for their own rape still sitting in the legislature and on committees?

She called that “Typical Republican hypocrisy.”

Sumner said “while they’re playing their pre-election games, people are dying and they’re doubling down on the man responsible for the atrocities.”
