TOWN OF WALLKILL – Moveable gates at the entrance ramps to Interstate 84 have been installed in Orange County.

Similar gates were previously erected on the highway in Dutchess and Putnam counties.

The State Transportation Department said they are being put in place as a safety measure.

Orange County Emergency Services Commissioner Brendan Casey supports their installation.

“It prevents people from getting out there and getting stuck and emergency responders have to get out in bad weather or severe snow conditions to try to rescue people, so anything that prevents people from getting there in conditions that are unsafe, we are in favor of,” he said.

The gates are being installed in Orange County as the state prepares to renumber the exits on I-84 to coordinate with the mileage from the Pennsylvania border. The exits have already been renumbered in Dutchess and Putnam counties.
