WEST SHOKAN – A team of goats has finished cleaning up the overgrown dike area at the Ashokan Reservoir and the herd could be heard saying the weeds and invasive species were not “baaaaad.”

The 11 goats were used this past summer at Glenford Dike in West Hurley to gobble up poison ivy, Japanese knotweed, and other weeds that have grown rampantly over the years.

The trial was the latest effort by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to rid the 2,850-foot dike of the vegetation.

The DEP began deploying goats at Neversink Dam and the dam at Rondout Reservoir to manage grassy areas in 2016.

The New York State Bridge Authority deployed goats to clean up vegetation under the Walkway Over the Hudson several years ago.

And, what do you think the goats’ favorite song or all times is?
