MONTICELLO – Sullivan County is “churning and burning” says a top economic development official.  That assessment comes from Sullivan County Partnership for Economic Development President and CEO Marc Baez.

During an upbeat meeting of the county legislature’s Economic Development Committee on Thursday, Baez said the “help wanted” sign is out.

“Cranes all over Sullivan County.  There’s jobs to be filled that we can’t fill.  There’s job signs all over the county … hiring now, we need help.”

Baez said they continue to get inquiries for new large projects.  The latest would be similar to the huge Kohl’s installation on Route 209 in Wurtsboro.

“We just go an inquiry for a distribution center, a large one, a million square feet.  We do have a site for that.”

That one could go on old Route 17.

Laura Quigley, director of Sullivan County Center For Workforce Development, said any business wanting to move to the county will find people willing to work.

“I just want to point out that the labor force for August, of 41,200 is the highest, which is super awesome,” Quigley said.  “An increase of eight percent over last year.”

Quigley noted they are working on a re-entry program for inmates at the new county jail.
