KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Patrick Ryan will include a Green Careers Academy in his proposed 2020 budget, when he delivers it later today.

The eight-week training program in partnership with SUNY Ulster, will deliver the skills and expertise necessary to begin careers in the expanding clean technology industry, he said.

The program will offer free or reduced tuition to certify the county’s youth, active volunteer firefighters, veterans, and low-income and long-term unemployed people in entry-level clean technology courses enabling them to apply for work in one of the clean technology companies in the county.

Ryan’s plan will also offer tuition assistance with private support to members of the LGBTQ community, women and others who have found placement in those industries difficult.

“Defending and protecting our environment and introducing innovative ways to address the climate crisis is one of my top priorities,” said Ryan. “The Green Career Academy is a significant step forward in solidifying Ulster County as the epicenter of an emerging green economy as we fight for a more sustainable future here in Ulster County and beyond.”
