Solaris' ferry service canceled this weekend

BEACON – The test weekend service of the solar-powered Solaris ferry between Newburgh and Beacon, which ran last weekend, will operate again on the weekend of October 19 and 20.

Beacon Mayor Randy Casale is taking a wait-and-see attitude about the Hudson River crossing by the 28-person vessel.

Casale is concerned since the Newburgh waterfront is developed with restaurants while the Beacon waterfront is a public park, he feels people will gravitate to the west side of the river and away from his city.

“I am concerned that if people from Beacon can go to those restaurants over there on a ferry, my Main Street businesses might lose business and until I see how it plays out, I am not going to take a stance if I am for or against it. Right now I see the only benefit is to the City of Newburgh and basically to the waterfront and not even the City of Newburgh.”

Casale noted Beacon has shuttle bus service from its waterfront up to the Main Street business district with its antique shops, boutiques and restaurants on Saturdays, but not Sundays.
