Lt. Col. Jones: "... so that we may be free, just and proud"

GOSHEN – Orange County officials and veterans took time out on Sunday to honor the memories of 40 county residents who were all killed 101 years ago on September 29 during World War I.

“One of the things we do as men and women that wear the uniform, and the families that are here today supporting us is that we’re constantly struggling,” County Executive Steven Neuhaus said. “We’re constantly banding together as men and women that wore the uniform to try and support each other.” Neuhaus, a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy Reserve, has served in Africa, South Korea, and recently returned from deployment in Iraq.

The guest speaker was Lt. Colonel Dave Jones, who retired from the Army in 2012 and served in Operation Desert Storm, Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan.

“Whether we’re civilians or in uniform, this day gives us the opportunity to honor the sacrifices of those who have served and who continue to serve so that we may be free, just and proud” Jones said.

Washingtonville High School JROTC Color Guard participated in the ceremony, presenting the flag. The well-attended memorial included members of the Nam Knights of America.

County Veterans Affairs Director Christian Farrell said September 29 is also Orange County Veterans Memorial Day and Gold Star Mother’s Day.
