NEWBURGH – For the first time in decades, the Newburgh City Police Department is opening a sub-station. This one will be on Johnston Street in conjunction with community housing renewal organization RUPCO.

City Manager Joseph Donat said it will be a major step forward in community policing.

“This will be about changing neighborhoods one block at a time,” Donat said. “This specific partnership with RUPCO is obviously transforming the Johnston area with Lander Street and our Community Progressive Response Team is primarily going to be using this facility. It is also going to provide a safe place for residents to meet with the police and strengthen our community policing efforts.”

Many years ago, Newburgh Police had a substation near South Junior High School and another one on Liberty Street.
