NEWBURGH – The Gidney Avenue basketball courts in the City of Newburgh have received a major upgrade.

The improvements include four new complete pole and hoop systems to replace the existing worn out structures in the park. Also, an additional gate on the main fence has been installed to increase safety for park users.

The project was funded through the state Community Development Block Grant at a cost of some $24,200.

“We are a unified city government and a unified city,” said Mayor Torrance Harvey. “We heard the people’s safety concerns regarding the Gidney Avenue Park and we responded collectively. Public safety is our number one priority.”

Councilwoman Karen Mejia said the upgrades will “assure public safety while our families enjoy recreational activities in this area.”

At-Large Councilman Anthony Grice said all of the city parks “should be safe and beautiful spaces for our residents. Placing an additional access and egress at the Gidney Avenue Park ensures that people can enter and exit safely.”
