BEACON – The Beacon City Fire Department’s career firefighter roster will be increasing from 13 to 16 thanks to a FEMA grant of $537,000 under the SAFER program.
Fire Chief Gary Van Voorhis said that will mean that three-career member shifts will be expanded to four career member shifts.
The department also has 21 volunteer firefighters, but only four are certified for interior firefighting.
The Beacon department responds to over 1,600 calls annually.
City officials will provide further details of the grant and its impact on the city next week.
