ALBANY – A bill making it easier for registered voters to vote in primary elections be extending the deadline to change party enrollment to February 14th was signed into law by the governor.

Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) was the prime sponsor of the bill. “This is another step to make voting easier and simple, which should always be our goal,” he said.

As the law currently stands, a voter must register to change their party enrollment at least 25 days before November’s general election in order for the change to take effect for the following year’s primary.

This bill sets February 14th, giving voters four additional months to change their party enrollment. Jacobson noted the new, later date is only 10 weeks ahead of the 2020 presidential primary on April 28.

Jacobson is chairman of the Subcommittee on Election Day Operations.
