SAUGERTIES – A fight between a half-dozen people near 78 Partition Street in the Village of Saugerties left one person with burns after being shot with a flare gun.

Saugerties Police were called to the scene around 6:38 p.m. on Saturday, September 21 for a report of fighting and that someone had possibly been stabbed with a knife.

Police stopped a vehicle on Route 212 after being told some of those involved in the fight may have fled. Three men and one woman were in the car and officers also located two of the people involved in the fight.

One of the people in the vehicle, Raven Banks, 18, of Port Ewen, had burns to his arm and shoulder and he told police he was shot with the flare gun during the fight. He was treated by paramedics from Diaz Ambulance.

Officers on Partition Street located Syler Degroat, 18, Kingston and a 17-year-old Kingston male, both of whom had been involved in the fight. The 17-year-old was treated at the scene for several lacerations to his arm, which he believes were caused by a knife during the fight.

Investigation found the two Kingston residents had come to Saugerties earlier in the day to get a tattoo. While at the tattoo parlor, Degroat said he received a phone call from a man saying he knew he was at the shop and “we are going to find you.”

Witnesses told police a car pulled up at 78 Partition Street, three men got out and started to throw a table and chairs at people on the sidewalk.

On Tuesday, September 24, police charged Degroat with felony attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He was remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail. The flare gun was recovered by police.

The investigation is continuing and police said additional arrests and charges are pending.
