NEWBURGH – The funeral service for Anthony Mancinelli of Newburgh, dubbed the oldest working barber in the world, will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Church in Newburgh.

Mancinelli was 108 years old when he died on Thursday, September 19.

Until July, he could be seen still cutting hair for many of his long-time customers.

Mancinelli, born March 2, 1911 in Montemilone, Italy, came to America in September 1919 on the ship Caserta. He served in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945.

He took up barbering in 1924.

Mancinelli received countless accolades through the years. He was grand marshal of the New Windsor Memorial Day parade for 13 years. He was inducted into the Barbers Museum and Hall of Fame and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

He received many honors from local, state and federal public officials and March 2 was declared Anthony Mancinelli Day in Orange County.

“Mr. Mancinelli became a barber at the young age of 12-years-old, owned his own barber shop at 19, and continued to work full-time until earlier this year. His story was both inspirational and amazing. I was honored to have my hair cut by Mr. Mancinelli a few years ago and to have the opportunity to spend some time with him. He was a kind, sweet, hard-working man. My condolences go out to his family.” Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus
