CARMEL – Thousands of members of the military serving overseas regularly receive care packages from home thanks to an organization known as United for the Troops.

The non-for-profit, founded by Jim Rathschmidt, believes that young men and women serving our nation should not go one day without the simple things of life: “We support these brave military personnel by sending them parcels they miss most while deployed,” said Rathschmidt as a small army of volunteers sorted, bagged and boxed items in a Putnam County-owned building at 34 Gleneida Avenue in Carmel, that will be forwarded overseas.

County Executive MaryEllen Odell described Rathschmidt as a “true American hero and a great patriot. Thanks to his efforts and band of volunteers thousands and thousands of boxes of goodies have been shipped to our troops overseas.”

Rathschmidt said to date the number is 21,840 parcels, each individually sent, also containing notes of love and admiration.

Despite the community response, Rathschmidt said support was always needed. “We need individually wrapped snacks such as pretzels, Pringles, trail mix, crackers, granola bars, fruit roll ups, Slim Jims, beef jerky, tea bags, hot chocolate packets, tuna in a pouch, instant oatmeal, gum, lifesavers and single serve condiments.”

Toiletries were also mentioned on the United for the Troops wish list including baby wipes, eye drops, lip balm, shampoo, disposable razors, shaving cream, insect repellent, mouthwash, dental floss, tissues, deodorant, nail clippers and feminine hygiene products.

Monetary donations are also welcome.

United for the Troops’ next drive is planned for November – Operation Holidays.
