MONROE – Algae blooms have cropped up in areas of the Millponds in the Village of Monroe.

As a result, Mayor Neil Dwyer said the village is in communication with its lake management consultant and the State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Dwyer noted the condition feeds from the runoff of excess nitrogen and phosphorous from lawn clippings, which migrate through stormwater drains, septic leaching, as well as lake vegetation and other nutrient rich biodegradable life.

As the water and air temperatures begin dropping, the soupy green substance on the surface of the ponds should die off, Dwyer said.

In the meantime, signs are posted around the ponds advising people:

  • Not to enter the water
  • Not to come in contact with the water
  • Not to drink the water
  • Not to fish in the ponds
  • Not to allow pets to enter the water or drink from the ponds

Should you or your pet come in contact with the algae bloom water, Dwyer said you should wash thoroughly with fresh water.

“We expect to see this situation resolve over the next several weeks,” he said.
